Outlast Time

Memorialize the inner essence of those you love in oil, pastel, or charcoal.

Why commission a portrait?

Throughout history, portraits have served to honor an individual. Sometimes a portrait celebrates a couple, an entire family, or even a beloved pet. A portrait can acknowledge an important event in a person’s life, such as a marriage or graduation, and it can tell a story about an individual’s interests and accomplishments. Commissioning a portrait is a way to pay tribute to a loved one, or anyone who has earned your respect, even after that person is gone. An original portrait in oil, pastel, or charcoal becomes a treasured family heirloom lasting for generations. It also makes a one-of-a-kind gift!

How I Go About Painting a Portrait

My ideal process for painting a portrait is as follows: First, I like to meet with the client to discuss ideas for the painting. During this meeting, we talk about things like clothing, setting, props, and the overall mood or statement we are hoping to achieve. We determine the desired size and price of the painting, and then sign an agreement stipulating a down payment of one-third of the total price. Next, we meet for two sessions lasting two hours each. During the first session, I sketch and photograph the subject in different poses. From this, I create some compositional studies, which I then review with the client at the following meeting. Based on client feedback, I continue to develop mock-ups which I then use to produce the final composition. Upon the client's approval and another payment of one-third the final price, I begin the painting. The client is invited to view the painting as it is in progress to ensure satisfaction. The final payment is due when the painting is finished and the client is happy.

This process can be modified to suit the needs of the client.

Portraits can also be done from photographs provided by the client.
