New Work by Charles Pompilius at Paint Creek

The 2020 Members Biennial Exhibition at Paint Creek Center for the Arts opens today, October 3, and continues through the month. I am showing four pastels from Naples, Florida. They depict the vastness of the Gulf of Mexico, and the stunning twilight cloud formations over Naples Bay. Each piece is on 9x12 inch cartón, a type of board commonly used by the Impressionists for pastel. Each is double matted and beautifully framed in a 16x20 inch bamboo frame. Gallery price is $1200.

PCCA is located at 407 Pine Street in charming downtown Rochester, MI. Call (248) 651-4110 for hours. You can also view the virtual exhibition on the Paint Creek website.

2020 Winter Classes at Paint Creek Arts

I am excited to be offering Oil Pastel at Paint Creek Center for the Arts in beautiful downtown Rochester, MI. Oil pastel is a unique fine art medium used to create works that are somewhere between drawing and painting. Unlike chalk pastel, oil pastel is made with a wax and oil binder. Invented for Picasso in Paris in 1948 by Sennelier, they quickly became popular with artists as an immediate and direct alternative to painting. In this class you will work from a floral motif or another subject of your choosing, and will learn a variety of techniques using a bristle brush, a solvent, and simple scraping tools. Class begins Tuesday morning, January 14.

On Wednesday morning, January 15, I am teaching Watercolor Pastel Mingle, where we explore how these media can be used together to enliven your work. There will be specific exercises and demonstrations, and all levels are welcome. For details and to register visit here...https://bit.ly/2Fi4ltj

My Naples Art classes start November 5. Tuesday mornings I am teaching ‘Portrait Drawing is More Than Likeness’. Good portraiture is not only about the sitter but the artist as well. This is a fun class where we use simple drawing materials in an expressionistic and experimental manner, while also learning about the proportions of the head and tips on how to achieve likeness. Learn more here… https://bit.ly/32NFasP
Wednesday morning is ‘Pastel & Watercolor Mingle’. Here we learn how these two media used together can produce unexpected but pleasing results. The Manitous

I just completed two paintings for the Manitou Music Festival annual poster competition. The festival takes place in Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes, along the shores of Lake Michigan. The concert is organized by Glen Arbor Arts Center, where I was artist-in-residence in 2014. South Manitou Island Lighthouse is located on South Manitou Island in Lake Michigan, 16 miles west of Leland, Michigan. The North Manitou Shoal Light, also known as The Crib, is located in Lake Michigan, southeast of North Manitou Island in Leland Township, Michigan.
